Blue couch meme explained

Why Is This '$8,000 Blue Couch' A Meme? Let's Explain Why Twitter Is Making Fun Of A Thrifty TikToker

There's an image of a blue couch being used in memes on Twitter right now and many are wondering why it's relevant. It all started when a New York City TikToker decided to take a couch off the street that she thought was worth $8,000.

The meme started when the video was reposted to Twitter and everyone started pairing the blue couch with funny captions because, well, they didn't agree with the TikToker's choice.

But why make the couch a meme at all? What did Twitter find wrong with the TikToker's video and her thrifty idea to swoop in on the modern piece of furniture? Let's explain.

What Is The 'Blue Couch' Meme?

TikToker @yafavv.mandaa wasn't thinking about ridicule when she uploaded a video on Saturday in which she'd found a new couch for her apartment on the streets of New York City. What's often called "stooping" in New York is when one finds furniture on the street that others are throwing away. One man's trash is another man's treasure, and this was the case with @yafavv.mandaa and the blue couch.

In fact, she was overly joyous because she looked up the price of the couch and alleged that it was worth roughly $8,000. She believed that the couch was made by the French designer Roche Bobois with the couch's model name being the BUBBLE 2 Canapé.

With the help of her father, @yafavv.mandaa successfully scooped the couch off the street and cleaned it once through with soap, water and a vacuum. After that, she put the thing in her living room, concluding her video on a high note.

Despite the seemingly wholesome nature of her video, many on TikTok questioned her decision to pick up the couch at all. Through TikTok duets, others on the app expressed their general skepticism when finding wet and cushioned furniture on the street, namedropping their fear of bed bugs and other reasons why an $8,000 couch might be on the street and not in the original owner's home.

This criticism and belief was amplified when the video was reposted to Twitter later on the same day. It all started when Twitter user @boymolish wondered why he wasn't as "lucky" as TikToker @yafavv.mandaa.

Soon after the video went viral on the new website, various meme creators started to caption a product image of the blue couch, posing satirical, imaginary scenarios that portrayed why the couch might have been out on the street. The memes then led to investigations over whether or not the couch was actually worth $8,000. Some on Twitter believed that it was actually a $600 knock-off couch from Aliexpress.

All in all, the blue couch became a meme because of the complex viral debate that ensued from it. People love arguing and criticizing online, especially when the criticism is mostly light-hearted and harmless. At the end of the day, the TikToker got a cool couch for free that her friends will have a funny story about. But maybe she should clean it one more time just to be safe.
